Even if the commute to work can be a grind, most of us haven’t thought of doing it any other way. We jump in our cars solo, and all too often have to find a gas station where the prices at the pump make us cringe.

Consider that ridesharing in 2022 isn’t the carpooling from the ’70s and ’80s. Back then, a group of folks who worked the same hours usually for the same company and often in the same department piled in station wagons to save on gas costs and take advantage of HOV lanes. If you wanted to join a carpool, you almost surely relied on word-of-mouth to find one.

Welcome to a better way! These days MidPenRideShare does the work for you. This free commuter matching service is for anyone who lives or works in the Middle Peninsula area and offers real-time ride matching with others who share similar hours and work locations.

Join MidPenRideShare online here. You can also download the app on the App Store or on Google Play from your phone.

You’ll be able to find rides as well as locate park-and-rides and bike paths. You can even check traffic. Complete your profile that asks all the details about your commute (you can even say you want to be the driver every time) and then select “find rides. New profiles are being added every day so not finding a match today doesn’t mean you won’t find one tomorrow. You’ll be able to find members traveling similar routes who you can contact online to discuss traveling together.

MidPenRideShare can also help you find rides to and from concerts and ballgames. Instead of paying a lot for parking there, you can split it two, three, four or more ways!

You save on miles not driven and on the gallons of gas your car won’t be needing. That puts more money in your pocket and contributes to fewer emissions in the environment. By tracking your trips in the app, you earn MidPenRideShare points.

Points add up to rewards! Several companies have jumped on board to offer discounts to reward you just for going green!

Drive less. Save more. And be rewarded from it! That’s carpooling 2022!

MidPenRideShare is a free service operated by the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission for residents, workers, commuters, and tourists in Virginia’s Middle peninsula (Counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex and the towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna, and West Point).
The Commission has partnered with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and their Virginia-wide ConnectingVA program to provide free ridematching to find carpools, vanpools, and all forms of public transportation, trip planning, and information on park-and-ride lots, bike share services, electric vehicle charging stations, and rewards.
