Hybrid work lives or dies on leadership. The schedules and tools matter, but what really holds a hybrid team together is clear expectations, consistent communication, and trust. Get those right and you don’t need to micromanage. Your team stays aligned, engaged, and productive whether they’re at their desk or at home.

That’s the idea behind the latest guide from ConnectingVA and MidPenRideShare: practical leadership tips for strong performance, without the micromanaging. Here are the ten.

10 ways leaders can strengthen a hybrid culture

  1. Set clear expectations for availability, communication, and performance.
  2. Lead by example and model healthy boundaries and strong communication yourself.
  3. Focus on outcomes, not hours. Trust your team to deliver results.
  4. Provide the right tools for hybrid work, including technology, access, and training.
  5. Establish communication norms so everyone knows when to chat, call, or meet, and whether it’s in person or virtual.
  6. Create consistent routines for check-ins and team connection.
  7. Train managers to support hybrid employees effectively.
  8. Recognize wins and keep people visible — both in-office and remote.
  9. Build inclusion on purpose so every employee feels supported and engaged, regardless of location.
  10. Encourage your team to sign up for ConnectingVA through MidPenRideShare to unlock support for hybrid work.

Support your hybrid workforce

A strong hybrid culture pays off well beyond your team’s performance. When people can work flexibly, fewer cars hit the road at peak hours, easing congestion and cutting emissions across the region. And when your employees do commute in, MidPenRideShare makes those trips easier with carpooling, vanpooling, and other commuter-friendly options.

Supporting your workforce and supporting your community turn out to be the same move.

Get your team connected.

Encourage your employees to sign up for ConnectingVA through MidPenRideShare for free hybrid work resources, commuting options, and more.

MidPenRideShare is a free service operated by the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission for residents, workers, commuters, and tourists in Virginia’s Middle peninsula (Counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex and the towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna, and West Point).
The Commission has partnered with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and their Virginia-wide ConnectingVA program to provide free ridematching to find carpools, vanpools, and all forms of public transportation, trip planning, and information on park-and-ride lots, bike share services, electric vehicle charging stations, and rewards.
