October is here, and the Car Care Council reminds us that it’s time to start preparing your vehicle for winter driving with Car Maintenance Month. To celebrate, we’ve put together our top 5 tips for making sure your car is ready for your weekday carpool:
1. Check Your Fluids
As temperatures start to drop, make sure your fluids are at the right levels. This includes:
- Engine Oil: Check the oil level and schedule an oil change if it’s been a while since your last.
- Coolant: Top off your coolant or replace it if needed.
- Brake Fluid: Top off your brake fluid and keep your brakes functioning well!
- Windshield Wiper Fluid: keep your windshield sparkling and clean by making sure your tank is full.
2. Inspect Your Tires
Tires are your car’s only contact with the road, so make sure to keep them in good condition. This month, make sure to:
- Check Tire Pressure: Cold weather can cause tire pressure to drop, making your car harder to handle and putting more wear on your tires.
- Inspect Tread Depth: Use the penny test or a tread depth gauge to ensure your tires have enough grip for wet or icy roads.
- Rotate Tires: If you haven’t rotated your tires recently, think about having them done to increase their life.
3. Test Your Battery
Lower temperatures can impact your battery’s performance. To keep your battery running smoothly:
- Check for Corrosion: Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if necessary.
- Test Battery Life: If your battery is over three years old, have it tested at an auto parts store or garage to see if it needs replacing.
- Secure Connections: Ensure all connections are tight to avoid issues when starting your car.
4. Replace Wiper Blades and Check Lights
Visibility is key when driving in the fall, especially with longer nights and rainy weather. Make sure to:
- Replace Wiper Blades: If your wipers leave streaks or make noise, it’s time for a replacement.
- Check Lights: Inspect all headlights, taillights, and turn signals to ensure they’re functioning properly.
5. Perform a Brake Inspection
Make sure your brakes are in top condition by:
- Listening for Noises: Pay attention to any squeaking or grinding sounds when applying the brakes.
- Feeling for Vibration: If your steering wheel vibrates when braking, it may be time for a brake inspection.
- Inspecting Brake Pads: If you have visible wear on your brake pads or if they’re less than a quarter inch thick, you may want to replace them.
