What if ridesharing to work appeals to you but giving up that “me time” in the car doesn’t.
Have the best of both worlds with these ideas that let you savor your personal time among others:
Music or Podcasts: Use the time during the carpool to listen to your favorite music, audiobooks or podcasts. This can be a great way to unwind and enjoy some personal entertainment while still engaging in the carpool. You can use headphones or suggest everyone in the pool give your favorite podcast a listen. Encourage your fellow riders to be honest about that works best for all.
Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practice mindfulness or relaxation techniques during the carpool. Use this time to focus on your breathing, practice mindfulness meditation or simply take in the scenery around you. Find beauty in the little things.
Reflection and Planning: Use the carpooling time for personal reflection or planning. Think about your goals, reflect on your day or plan for upcoming events. Make a shopping list. Or plan out all you have to do for tomorrow. Carpooling can provide a quiet, uninterrupted space for introspection.
Personal Growth: Use the time to engage in personal growth activities such as learning a new language with language learning apps, listening to educational podcasts or even brainstorming ideas for personal projects or hobbies. Imagine you and your carpool buddies practicing your new skills. Kdo vozi? (That’s “carpool anyone?” in Slovenian!).
Create Boundaries: Communicate with your carpool partners about your need for some personal space during the ride. While it’s important to engage in conversation and build relationships with your fellow carpoolers, it’s OK to set boundaries and carve out some quiet time for yourself. If you carpool multiple days, reserve one day for your personal time.
By being intentional about how you use your time during the carpool, you will find moments of “me time” amid the shared commute.
