Happy Bike Month! As you dust off your favorite set of two wheels to join us in celebrating Bike Month this May, it’s important to have a quick refresher of the smart rules that ensure your safety while cycling.

Cycling is not only environmentally friendly, but also an excellent way to stay active and explore all our region has to offer. Make sure you’re doing so safely by keeping these quick tips in mind every time you hop on your bike:

  1. Protect Your Head: ALWAYS wear a helmet. It’s a simple step that can save your life in case of an accident.
  2. Stay Visible: Make sure drivers can see you by wearing bright clothing and using reflective gear, especially when biking at night or in low-light conditions.
  3. Look, Signal, & Look Again: Make sure to look around before making any moves and to use hand signals to indicate your intentions to drivers and other cyclists. Signaling helps everyone on the road understand your next move.
  4. Stay Alert: Keep your eyes on the road and be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for obstacles and anticipate potential hazards.
  5. Go with the Flow: When biking on main roads, be sure to go in the direction of traffic to avoid confusion or accidents.
  6. Act Like a Car: Maintain a predictable path and avoid weaving in and out of traffic. Following traffic patterns makes it easier for drivers to anticipate your movements.
  7. Avoid Distractions: Don’t listen to music or talk on the phone while riding. Stay focused on the road ahead and your surroundings.
  8. Obey Traffic Laws: Follow all traffic signals and signs. Treat your bike as if it were a car and adhere to the same rules of the road.
  9. Assure Bicycle Readiness: Before setting off, ensure your bike is properly adjusted and in good condition.
  10. Do a Quick Bicycle Test: Check your brakes, wheels, and saddle for any issues and resolve before you start your ride.

Last, but not least, don’t forget to track your miles using the MidPenRideShare app. As an added bonus, this May 2024 in celebration of Bike Month, you have the chance to win an electric bike and helmet! Just login to the app, track your ride and be entered to win!

Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility. By following these rules and staying vigilant on the road, you can make sure your next ride is both safe and fun!

Happy biking!
