Coleman Bridge at sunset, a key route for Middle Peninsula commuters.
Blog

Whether you’re crossing the Coleman Bridge, heading into Gloucester, or commuting into the Richmond or Hampton Roads metro areas, the daily drive can add up — in time, cost, and stress. That’s why MidPenRideShare is here to help make commuting smarter, easier, and more sustainable.

Let’s clear the air on some common commuting myths — and share the facts that could save you money and time.

Myth #1: Driving alone is the fastest way to get to work.

Fact: Not always — especially on the Middle Peninsula.

While solo driving may seem faster, ridesharing options — including carpooling and vanpooling — can help you avoid traffic bottlenecks and reduce time spent searching for parking. Plus, many shared rides use commuter lots with quick access to major routes like Route 17 and I-64.

Myth #2: Carpooling or vanpooling is more expensive.

Fact: It’s often cheaper than driving solo.

When you share the ride, you share the cost — of fuel, maintenance, and tolls. MidPenRideShare helps match you with nearby commuters and even supports vanpool groups with potential subsidies or employer partnerships.

Myth #3: My commute doesn’t really affect the environment.

Fact: Every trip counts.

Transportation is one of the largest sources of emissions in Virginia. Just by carpooling a few days a week, you reduce your carbon footprint — and help keep the Middle Peninsula’s beautiful environment healthy.

Myth #4: Carpooling means being stuck to someone else’s schedule.

Fact: Flexibility is built into today’s rideshare options.

MidPenRideShare uses modern tools to help you find others with similar schedules, and many vanpools build in flexibility for varied hours. Plus, riders often rotate driving or adjust pickup locations to make it work for everyone.

Myth #5: Commute time is wasted time.

Fact: It can actually be your most productive or relaxing time of day.

Riders in carpools or vanpools can use the time to read, catch up on emails, listen to podcasts, or simply decompress. Your commute can go from draining to energizing.
